  • About Cylinder Lawn Mowers

One cannot do better than purchase a quality cylinder lawn mower as it is one of the best types of lawn mowers to mow your garden lawn with.  Cylinder lawn mowers can go forward, either they are pushed by you or self-propelled. Cylinder lawn mowers are generally built with a cylinder that is horizontally mounted and having a number of excellent cutting blades on the surface trimming and mowing the grass to the required height. Quality as always goes hand in hand with the price and you always get what you actually pay for. The main drawback of the cylinder lawn mower is obviously the price. Nonetheless, you will have no trouble finding a basic electric mower that costs around £75 and with some research and work, you can achieve the stripes on your garden you have always imagined of.

Design & Operation:

The cylindrical blade of these mowers is of a special form and these mowers are said to have the most perfect and brilliant design. The design consists of a number of blades curving one above another in a fashion that they form a helical portion individually and when assembled, they form a cylinder structure that offers the lawn mowers built with this cylindrical structure their name. Coming to its operation, the blade can rotate forward as well as backward along an axis that goes between the centres of the two wheels. The quicker the blade rotates, the finer is the cutting of the grass. The speed of the rotation of the cylindrical blade is dependent on the rotation speed of the wheels and therefore the faster the mower moves, the quicker the blades do too.  However, this design is meant only for fast movement and thereby the blades tend to slip, if the lawn mower is moving very fast.

The quality of the mowing finish is also determined by the number of blades that rotate around the mower cylinder. The more the numbers of blades, the much better the quality of cut. A few cylinder mower models are incorporated with about 5-6 cutting blades and are perfect for a high quality utility grade lawn. Cylinder lawn mowers that are built with about 10-12 blades are made use of on luxury lawn yards and give you an excellent finish. The cylinder width can also vary depending on the model. You have the advantage of fewer trips back and forth while you are mowing, but this obviously should offset against how simple it is to manoeuvre the mower.  A wider mower cylinder will apparently make the equipment heavier and bulkier and so manoeuvring around the corners would be much difficult.

Types of cylinder lawn mowers:

Cylinder lawn mowers are classified into two basic types namely petrol and electric cylinder mowers.

Petrol Cylinder lawn mowers: These mowers make use of a set of blades that could rotate inside a cylinder in front of a roller. This helps the mower to leave nice stripes on the lawn garden. Besides, the cylinder pulls the equipment forward and this may save you a good amount of time and effort. As you may find in the rotary mowers, cylinder mowers are integrated with a grass box in which the grass that is cut is placed. Therefore, the main advantage of cylinder lawn mowers is that they offer your lawn a lovely stripped appearance and they do not need from you much of an effort when you mow the grass. There is a downside to these types of mowers and that is they are usually pricier than the rotary version because their cutting blades are highly precision engineered. A cylinder mower with a roller is the perfect way to create 100 percent striped lawn.

Electric cylinder mowers: These mowers are ideal for high-class lawns that need an excellent finish. They mow grass that are shorter than rotary & hover mowers and make them quite inappropriate for uneven lawns because they might ground. Grass that is much shorter does not cope too well with a fairly large amount of wears making cylinder lawn mowers suitable for higher lawns. Their name is derived from their set or series of blades that form a cylinder. You will find that when the cylinder moves forward, it mows the lawn grass against a blade that is stationery similar to a scissor-like-action producing a cheaper cut than hover or rotary mower. Electric cylinder lawn mowers provide you a nice stripped effect because the grass is mowed in the same course and direction and these mowers are built with a rear roller that helps flattens the grass being cut as you push the mower along. Petrol mowers seem to be quite heavy and this will make them much better for producing stripes though with the larger electric lawn mowers, the variation or difference is negligible.

Self-propelled cylinder lawn mowers: These mowers make use of a power source to push themselves in the forward direction in addition to rotating the blades. This obviously saves much energy and time of the operator as minimum amount of effort is needed to manoeuvre the mower around the garden lawn, so self-propelled lawn mowers make a good option and are worth a thought before you buy a mower for medium to large sized lawns. A cylinder lawn mower with a roller is the perfect way to create 100 percent striped lawn with brilliant 'striped effect'.

Disadvantages of cylinder mowers:

There are some drawbacks when it comes to cylinder mowers and that is they are more ideal for flat uniform lawns. You must avoid cylinder mowers if you have a lawn that is pretty uneven or contains long, rough grass types because they would not be able to tackle these types of lawns well.

Bottom-line:

Incorporated with powered cylinder (so no more heavy pushing), cylinder blades (for even cut), and grass collection (bucket that makes sure the mower leaves no grass cuttings on the lawn), the cylinder lawn mowers can create a beautiful lawn with lovely stripes.
