  • About Hover Mower

Hover mowers are specialised mowers, normally utilised for a single application. They run similar to a conventional rotary lawn mower with a bit of twist. These mowers do not have wheels and obviously ‘hover’ on the surface of the turf. Hover lawn mowers come with a special ability to float on an air cushion and this makes them ideal for mowing slopes that are steeper where at other times, the walk behind mowers that are wheeled can slip easily and mow unevenly and even pose a potential danger. Hover lawn mowers are generally available in the electric version, but petrol variety is very popular with the contractors who make use of them for cutting verges and steep banks.

Advantages of Hover Mowers:

Hover Mowers are driven by rotary push mowers that make use of a turbine over the spinning blades that help drive air downwards, hence producing an air cushion that could lift the lawn mower on top of the ground. As an operator, you can then easily move the lawn mower because it floats above the grass; therefore it is easy to operate. Hover mowers are essentially lightweight so as to achieve the air cushion and usually come with plastic bodies integrated with an electric motor. This makes it a light mower and convenient to operate helping the manoeuvrability and floating.

Disadvantages of Hover lawn Mowers:

The major drawback of the Hover lawn mowers is that they are difficult to manoeuvre on the edges of the lawn or in rough terrain because the lifting air-cushion is damaged by wide gaps between the hover’s chassis and the surface. Another downside is that not all the movers come with grass boxes. Therefore, if you are not too interested on raking up the grass cuttings after you finish mowing or leaving the cuttings on the lawn, it does not work out because of the cutting getting packed down back into your house. There are obvious advantages of leaving the grass cuttings on the lawn as they will benefit your lawn.

Types of Hover Petrol lawn mowers:

Hover petrol mowers: These movers are considered to be the lightest of movers. These hover mowers are perfect for mowing longish grasses. This is mainly because these are very manoeuvrable and simple to handle in areas which you find hard to access for cylinder or rotary mowers. Thanks greatly to the air cushion effect, the basic operation of these mowers. If you have your lawn on an uneven, bumpy ground or slope, you should think about selecting a hover mower.

Electric hover mowers: The most popular version of hover mowers are the electric version and are perfect for small to medium lawns. They can tackle uneven terrains well and you will have no trouble moving them in all directions. These hover mowers feature rollers that are built at the front, though these rollers are for moving the mower in the absence of power.  The hover mower is tipped over on to the roller and you can wheel it around. Care must be taken that if you do not get these rollers, you will have the trouble of carrying the mower to transport it without power. Electric hovers are cheaper and can effectively manage long grass and this is the reason why Flymo Hover range is so popular in the UK.

Bottom-line:

The Electric hovers are pretty lightweight to be hung or carried in your shed, cheap and handling the mower even in-between flowerbeds is a doddle. Though one may be satisfied with the results, the finish you may get from hover mowers will not be of the high standards as you will get from a cylinder lawn mower and the fact that it does not have a roller will pull things back as it will not be able to achieve the dramatic lines which a roller mower will otherwise give you. But for small to medium lawn gardens, if the lack of stripes concerns you, then a hover mower comes as an excellent alternative to the regular four wheel petrol mowers and heavy cylinders are available. The hover mower can produce a bit of noise when it is in its elements and it can also be slightly awkward to alter position. Though it makes use of a horizontal blade for cutting, making it ideal for smaller gardens, they do not come with rear rollers and this we are afraid will fail to produce a decent striped effect to our lawn.
