  • About Push Lawn Mowers

A push lawn mower is highly manoeuvrable and convenient to push than a non-self propelled power lawn mower. Because it has a scissor-like cutting action, it usually does not damage or bruise the blades of grass, which helps you maintain a healthier and greener lawn. These mowers are designed to give you several years of reliable service and maximum cutting performance with optimum lawn care and less maintenance. In terms of value, the push mower benefits your lawn as well as the environment. In push lawn mowers, you can normally find 8 to 9 blades that rotate in a circular motion as you push the mower forward. The rotary blades are located about a vertical axis and as the cutting blades rotate around the axis, it will enable the lawn to get mowed in an even and uniform fashion.

Advantages of Push lawn mowers:

Push mowers do not have any starter or engine problems to be concerned about. With a simple mode of operation there is no need for gasoline, engine repairs and spark plugs. They are lightweight because they are convenient to push than the electrically propelled mowers which are quite heavy. Needless to say, they are good for the environment. The good thing is that they do not pollute the surroundings and this means you do not have to take in carbon monoxide and poisonous fumes while you are mowing. They are quiet in operation; therefore your baby will not wake up while you are mowing. They deliver exceptional results as motorized lawn mowers rip or tear at grasses whilst the push mowers snip it up in the form of a scissor-like precision. With low maintenance cost, these mowers provide you some exercise too. Another positive point of this mower is that while the mower is cutting the lawn grass, it can lock the moisture in and this means the grass will have no trouble growing naturally. Completely easy to store, they do not consume much room like a seated mower and are of course much compact in size than the motorized push mowers.

Disadvantages of Push Mowers:

Push mowers are not ideal for large lawns and few varieties of thick grasses. Lawns that are filled with many pine cones and fallen branches are also not ideally suited for mowing with Push Mowers as these lawns are required to be raked or the mower will get jammed. These mowers are also not suited for lawns with dandelions or many weeds. There are some people who find these mowers noisier and this may be because they would not have oiled the blades properly, so do not forget to oil the blades to avoid disappointment after purchase.

Using a Push mower:

The principle of working of a push lawn mower is slightly different from a standard rotary mower. It could only cut the things that get between the cutter bar and the reel. So, it is vital that you cut your lawn on a regular basis and not let the grass reach a height of over 3”-4” so as to ensure a proper grass cut. It is always a good practise not to mow 1/3rd of the grass blade as this encourages a deeper root system. If your lawn has a wide network of roots, it requires less help finding water and food and could well crowd out garden weeds. If the lawn gets extraordinarily tall (4” or over), it could be essential that you raise the amount of overlap found in-between passes, cut the same path up and back, both once, or actually cut or mow in a sort of checkboard pattern to get the required results.

If you mow on a regular basis and maintain the lawn at the required height, the push lawn mower can deliver exceptional results. The scissor-like action will help your grass retain moisture, thereby keeping your lawn healthier and greener than traditional rotary mowers. The mowing techniques of course will depend upon the conditions and changes in your lawn. During spring, the lawn grass can grow vigorously and is filled with moisture. Each blade of grass is full and thick. The mower is set at a greater cutting height and mow as regularly as necessary so as to stop grass from reaching over 4” tall.

With an extended summer period, you will find the grass becoming thinner and having less moisture content. It does tend to droop rather than standing upright, especially when the height is over 4”. This means that you need to lower your mowing height to obtain the required appearance. Not all lawns are same and the variation depends greatly upon the varieties of grasses present. Perhaps, you may experiment a bit to find out the results for the lawn.  A push lawn mower could have a tough time with tall willowy seeds including buckthorn or dandelions. If you find these weeds in your lawn, do not be taken in for a surprise, if you are not comfortable mowing them. There is a good solution for tall weeds and that is to dig the weeds out or mow them before they achieve their complete growth.

Setting Cutting Height & Maintenance: Each brand of mower has its own method of changing the cutting height. When it comes to the maintenance of the mower, you probably have to lubricate it and clean it up well and ensure you continue to do so regularly. There are a few things you can follow for optimum care of your mower. The cutter bar should be properly adjusted and don’t over tighten it. If time permits, do take a look at the instruction manual before you go about the adjustments. The bearings as well as the cutting edges with WD-40 or any like product should be lubricated on a regular basis. If you need to sharpen the blades, you will find the required instructions in the instruction manual or may be a few brands provide you with a sharpening kit.

Bottom-line:

Do you know that Elwood McGuire of Richmond in Indiana built a lawn mower in 1870 that is human-pushed? This machine which was quite lightweight proved a great commercial success in those days. Though not the first of the designs, it certainly paved the way for the rapid development and innovation of modern push propelled lawn mowers.  If all you want is a smooth lawn area with a lovely appeal, then the push lawn mower is the best available option with perfect grass cutting.

With a wide range of Push lawn mowers from leading brands listed at the top of the section, you can compare their features, technical specifications and prices among various models. Supplied by major UK retailers, shops and merchants, these push mowers are available at cheap prices and do spend some time comparing their prices so as to get the best deal.
